UK Salsa Congress - The Next Generation

With still no word from organisers Salsa-UK on the fate of this year’s UK International Salsa Congress, it looks increasingly as if we are witnessing the passing of what has been the country’s most prestigious salsa dance event to date.
Congress always was the high point and the heart of the UK Salsa calendar. There were years where the party vibe was overwhelming, years when it was underwhelming. But for sheer heroic scale, this was the Big Daddy of the UK Salsa circuit, boldly going where no-one had ever gone before. It was without equal.
At the same time, Britfest – the salsa congress of the North – went the way of the Norwegian Blue a while ago. The demise of both events left a yawning gap.
In the meantime, new contenders for the throne have arisen. An ambitious new Latin Festival - Salsa Kingdom - is set on transplanting the heart of the UK Salsa Scene in the North. The organisers are intent on creating a fun festival with a party vibe and stonking live bands. With the early bird price of £100 running out on 5th July, this is the time to book:
www.salsakingdom.co.uk or 07977 134 927. They have the vision and the passion for Latin music to bring a whole new spicy flava to the UK Salsa scene.
Rising from the ashes of Britfest is the Great British Salsa Experience (GBSEX). Pulling in top international dance instructors and performers including Santo Rico & Los Hermanos, Irene Miguel and more, this launches in Manchester, Friday 21st-Sunday 23rd November. To book:
www.thegreatbritishsalsaexperience.com   call: 00 44 (0) 161 881 4604. With Salsology’s Emma Moore at the helm, this is bound to be a winner.
We’ll bring you more news and updates on both events as we get it!

London Salsa News: BIG FREE GIG IN LONDON 8 APRIL 08

GIRLFRIEND ALERT: PHEROMONES A G0-GO - CHARANGA HABANERA ARE BACK, 28 JUNE

LEAVE YOUR MAN BEHIND TO OGLE THE HOTTEST CUBAN EYE CANDY AROUND - CHARANGA HABANERA ARE BACK IN THE UK FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THREE YEARS for Carnival de Cuba, Southwark Park on Saturday June 28th and Sunday June 29th.
We saw Charanga live at Floridita’s Best of the Cuban Music Awards in 2005. They packed the place out with so many pheromones there was only room for girls, 10 rows deep at the front. These guys are Cuba’s hottest export - one of the world’s all-time Cuban great Salsa-Timba bands, in the top three with Los Van Van & Manolito in our estimation AND they are hot totty, girlfriend.
Last year 50,000 people turned out for Carnival de Cuba- London’s biggest celebration of Cuban music and dance, direct from Cuba. This year, with headliners Charanga Habanera, the turnout will be mad. The Latinos will be there, the Latinophiles will be there and the Ladies will be there, ogling and grooving.
They are joined the island's reggaeton sensation, Eminencia Clasica & hip-hop star Telmary, plus UK-based Cuban reggaeton stars Papo Record and Kid Afrika & Osvaldo Chacon y su Timba and the hot new UK-based Cuban band Tumbao Tivoli. Photograph: Miguel del Foto,

Best of London Salsa: Alex Wilson Gig - 20th June 08

Alex Wilson’s Uplifting Roots Crew are the New Heroes of Reggae

ALEX WILSON’S UPLIFTING ROOTS CREW NAILED THEIR INTENTIONS TO THE MAST AT THEIR FIRST OF THREE NIGHTS AT THE PIZZA EXPRESS JAZZ CLUB, 10 DEAN STREET, LONDON W1D 3RW LAST NIGHT (THURSDAY 19th - SATURDAY 21st JUNE).

Reggae just itself got a whole new set of heroes, bringing the definitive sound of Jamaica bang up to date with a new London & Latin twist. Carlos Santana’s “Black Magic Woman” performed Bob Marley style with killer wah-wah guitar solos from Amy Winehouse’s Robin Banerjee was a real tropical, feel good treat, summing up the whole night.

.         On their second ever outing, this crew were in the zone, sounding like they’d played together for years. This was Alex Wilson’s first collaboration with Aswad’s awesome drummer Kenrick Rowe and these artists together didn’t just play their socks off; the musicianship was simply mesmerising.  Add soul divas Aquilla Fearon and Niaomi Phillips to the mix plus solid support on bass from Colin Walker and you’ve got a whole sound, letting out its first powerful cry...and there’s a whole new musical life opening up.
For dancers, there isn’t space at Pizza Express to strut your stuff but this is a real opportunity to get closer to the music, right at the creative cutting edge, so you can follow the music dance floor, right in the groove, with sabor. Get along to Pizza Express and enjoy.
Doors: 7.30pm, set: 9.00pm. Price: £22.00 per person. To book:
www.pizzaexpresslive.com
Call: 020 7734 3220. Book a table to ensure your full enjoyment.
